We have awaited the New Year in style. Now comes the next major celebration that is coming up on your calendar. Well, you have guessed it right. It is the Sankranthi festival that I am talking about. Also known as ‘Pongal’ downsouth of India. Come on, let us see the meaning or significance of ‘Pongal or Sankranthi’ on a more detailed note.
You can call it ‘Pongal’ or ‘Sankranthi’. This is the farmer’s festival that is implied here. We pay our reverence to the Sun and Rain Gods who have been bountiful in providing rains or sunlight to help food crops grow aplenty. ‘Pongal’ is also known as the harvesting festival, as a matter of fact. Farmers grow food crops like paddy, wheat, maize, jowar , bajra, millets, corn, fruits and vegetables. This is how the food comes to your table.
We celebrate the harvesting fest as ‘Pongal’ in TamilNadu, Kerala, and Pondicherry. The fest is named ‘Sankranthi’ across households covering Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Karnataka. People call it ‘Baisakhi’ across parts of WestBengal, Odisha and parts of North-Eastern India. Households call the harvesting fest ‘Lohri’ in parts of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan. Hence in a way, the whole of India thank the gods to pour their benevolence in helping food crops grow.
If you look at it, in parts of South India, we have a three day festival connected with ‘Pongal’ Celebrations.
Day 1: People wear new clothes and adorn their homes with colorful rangolis. Women mainly make a platter using ‘rice’ as the staple ingredient. They make sweet pongal, salty pongal, chana dal vadas, rasam, sambhar, papads and lay out an entire South Indian platter out there. At households, they draw faces of the ‘Sun God’ and Moon God. Sugarcane is placed at either side of the spectrum. The significance here is, we are paying our homage and respects to the Sun and moon gods for taking care of the crops grown by farmers day and night.
Day 2: This is the day we dedicated to the ‘Oxen’ that plough the farmer’s land. Traditionally, farmers used ‘Ox’ to plough large tracts of agricultural lands. Today, tractors do the job for us. Hence cows, and oxen are decorated. In South India, this day is called ‘Mattu Pongal’ meaning a day dedicated to worshiping cows and oxen.
Day 3- The farming communities plan excursions or trips to their villages or towns. Plenty of food items are prepared. The farmer also known as ‘Uzhavar’ is named ‘Uzhavar Thirunaal’.
Typically, Sankranti is also celebrated with fervor and enthusiasm across parts of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Karnataka. People wear new clothes and make sweets and savories gracing the occasion. At outlets in Bangalore, we get a delicacy called ‘Yellu Bellu’. This is sesame or til seeds mixed with jaggery bits, coconut pieces and colored confetti.
Typically, Lohri and Baisakhi are also celebrated across parts of India with greater enthusiasm. People make sweet bites and call guests home for lunches or a lavish platter of dinners. The pilgrim spots are also usually crowded during this time of the year. Devotees or pilgrimage enthusiasts go to Vrindavan or Mathura to seek the blessings of Lord Krishna.

One of the common statements / excuses / arguments from most people is “Hey, I could never eat vegan food” or “I could never buy a product from a vegan store” and so many other clichés. However, what people fail to realize is, Veganism is NOT a diet, it’s simply a way of Life. Veganism simply means choosing a compassionate option to lead our life in a way as practicable as possible. Veganism isn’t about drastically changing your lifestyle, it simply means we lead our lives the same way albeit by making smarter, friendlier choices. What does that mean? Simple !
Well, there isn’t a checklist that you need to tick off to turn Vegan, because Veganism isn’t about doing different things, it’s just about doing things differently. Yes, you pretty much do everything the same way you’re used to, just making sure that the products you purchase or consume aren’t harmful (or least harmful – because unfortunately every thing we humans do / create / invent has some impact) to another human or non-human (the animals ! ) or the environment. It’s not about just the animals, or just the environment, it’s also about helping humans. Our daily choices have the power to impact industries and shut down companies such as unethical brands, slaughterhouses that do not respect human labor. Most people will argue that it would lead to massive unemployment. But in reality, businesses and industries will always move towards where they see demand. Thus, if ethical consumption increases, ethical production is what will follow.
Most restaurants, most shops in todays times have vegan options (atleast one, but trust me, it’s growing !). In countries like India, there are countless dishes and recipes which are accidentally Vegan and yes, we’ve all been eating them, loving them, drooling all over them all our lives, much before we even heard the word “Vegan” which now scares away so many of us as being this “extreme” way of Life, whereas all Veganism means to do is to simplify life and make it fair, not just to consumers, but even to animals and the biggest beneficiary in the end will of course be all of us, since Climate Emergency is the biggest challenge ahead of mankind, and 7 billion people making the right choices can definitely tilt the balance in our favour.

Similar to certain misconceptions on diet, many non-vegans or transitioning vegans comparatively feel that plant-based diets may lack dosage of Calcium. Hence, Calcium tablets are to be consumed on a day-to-day basis. Still, people think that Milk and dairy products are the only sources which one can derive Calcium from.
Again, look at the irony here. Grass-fed cattle get their Calcium from plants. And, as they eat grass or green leaves of plants, that is the original source from where the milch animals get their Calcium from. As humans, we can also derive adequate Calcium by including plant-based diets that are rich in Calcium in our daily diet plan. Presenting to you some of the super plant-based foods where you can derive your Calcium from:
Soybeans are power-packed plant-based food that is rich in Calcium. Typical foods that are made from soybeans are tofu, tempeh, and nato. Tofu that is fortified with Calcium phosphate contains about 350 mg for a serving of 100 grams. Plus, soybeans are excellent sources of proteins, vitamins, fiber, and other minerals your body needs for its day-to-day functioning. Including tofu salads or making continental delicacies using tempeh can give you a balanced diet of vitamins or minerals to meet out your body’s daily requirements. Hence, soy products can make your daily diet a balanced one.
Chickpeas, black beans, winged beans, white and navy beans, kidney beans, and lentils are exotic sources of Calcium. These are superfoods that can easily meet your RDI (Recommended Daily Intake) on Calcium. These plant-based foods are also rich sources of proteins, fiber, iron, zinc, potassium, magnesium, and folate. You can make sprouted dals, salads, exotic varieties of Indian gravies, and a lot more flavourful recipes using beans, peas, or lentils. Thai or Continental soups liberally make use of green peas. Hummus or plant-based sauces use chickpeas as the primary ingredient. This way, you can add beans or lentils to your daily diets quite effortlessly.
Almonds are excellent sources of Calcium. And, this is a plant-based ingredient. Roasted almonds can be had along with green tea or lemon tea. Other forms of dry nuts like Brazilian nuts too are exotic sources from which you can derive your recommended dose of Calcium. Dry fruits are naturally good sources of protein, fiber, Calcium, and healthy fats. You can make kinds of nutty butter if you want to include nuts on your everyday platter. You can use almond or cashew butter you can smother onto your sandwiches. Alongside, you can crunch on walnuts or figs for a daily evening snack. Also, you can make dry-fruit energy bars that can be made from dates, cashews, walnuts, almonds, figs, pistachio, etc. When you have a bowl of assorted dry fruits, you can reduce your weight, lower your blood pressure and also avoid incidences of metabolic disorders such as Diabetes Type 2 or Heart Disease.
Tahini is a butter that is made from sesame seeds. This is an exotic powerhouse of Calcium. Tahini butter contains about 130 mg per two tablespoons of serving. Again, this contributes to 13% of RDI on your daily intake of Calcium. Again flax and chia seed butter contain about 8 mcg of Calcium in every serving (approximately 2 tablespoons or 30 ml of it). Similar to nuts, seeds can also provide you with other vital nutrients like vitamins, minerals, healthy fats, plant sugars, fiber, and protein.

As a Mum of an 8YO daughter myself, I can pretty much relate to Mama’s guilt when it comes to feeding a child a proper and a well nutritious meal. As a vegan mom, I have always been concerned about my daughter’s health and well-being. I drink lemon tea three times a day. I use Good Mylk’s Vegan curd to satiate my need for an authentic probiotic food. I just use veggies, refined sunflower oil, herbs, and spices to toss up the food that comes on my table. However, during travel, I am not able to honestly follow my vegan ethics to its ultimatum. The tuna were dragged onto boats, from the ocean, and they were violently struck with harpoons. The process was done again and again until every tuna was bludgeoned to death. The tuna struggled, choken and finally bled to death. The undercover investigation was also featured in the documentary ‘Cowspiracy’.

We looked at the kind of cruelty meted out to silkworms, wool-producing sheep and lambs, egg-laying hens, and so on. In this particular segment, I am going to highlight the enormous amount of cruelty that is meted out to animals that are particularly raised for the meat industry. Let's see what happens here:
Raising farm animals particularly to squeeze their flesh out for the meat industry is what animal agriculture or animal farming is all about. The farmers breed billions of animals so that they can be tortured, enslaved, mutilated, and finally slaughtered for their meat or flesh. So, what kind of animals are particularly raised for their meat or flesh?
Farm animals are easier to trick and maime by the human population, as a matter of fact. These are gentle animals unlike wild elephants or ferocious tigers. Hence, it becomes easier for human beings to capture these animals and therefore domesticate them. Cows, pigs, goats, chickens, turkeys, rabbits, and buffaloes. So, I am going to break this article into independent segments to raise awareness on the acute level of cruelty that is meted out to animals by mankind.
As we have already seen to what magnitude the cruelty takes place at egg-laying industry, you know what happens here! Chickens are crammed into battery cages and they lay eggs day in and day. Every 34 hours, an egg is forcibly produced by egg laying hens to meet the demands of the growing human population. Male chicks are ground alive in a mixer-grinder or macerator. Female chicks are debeaked and let into sheds or battery cages. They occupy the place of their spent mothers. The spent daily hens or chickens are then taken to slaughter houses where their bodies are wringed upside down and their throats are slit. This happens, once the egg-laying capacities of hens or chickens reduces.
There was an article as documented by me ‘ Discover the cruelty behind a glass of milk’. Here, the steps are outlined as to what exactly happens at the dairy industry. Cows are artificially insemnated and kept pregnant all the time so that their bodies lactate milk 24/7. Upon pregnancy, the male cows are taken away just within 24 hours from the time of birth. The female calves are given alternative feeds and not the mother’s milk. The female calves of cows and buffaloes take the place of spent dairy cows/ buffaloes.
The spent cows and buffaloes are dragged to slaughter sheds and their throats are slit while they are fully conscious. This happens when the dairy cows or buffaloes are no longer able to produce milk. The male calves are sent for cheap veal or meat almost 5-6 weeks post their birth as they are deemed as waste by products belonging to the dairy industry. Soft leather is also made from baby cow or calves.
It is estimated that almost 90 percent of the pigs in the US come from factory farms. The pigs are artificially insemenated by factory workers, as a matter of fact. Their teats are chopped off while they are crammed into grills or battery cages. The animals are lonely and sad all the time. The piglets are again raised wherein the workers drag the piglets away from their mothers.
Artificial feeds or mom’s milk is given to the piglets in a forceful manner. If too many piglets are born, then workers kill or gas these animals in gas chambers at slaughter houses. Matured piglets take the place of spent pigs. Once pigs reach a certain weight, they are slaughtered or gassed off. Their body parts come to you as hamburger, pork or steaks.
The goats are slaughtered for their flesh predominantly. Mutton biryanis are famous for marriages, functions or at restaurants acorss India. These people maintain micro-level slaughter sheds. The goats are tied to stick poles. They are given grass or grain feeds to fatten up their bodies. Once goats reach weights, their throats are slit in slaughter houses. Goat milk is also reared for use in skin-care and beauty products. Lambs are slaughtered for use on soup bowls or as broth meats.
Every Thanksgiving Day, at least 4 million turkeys are butchered to feed families of the US and the UK. Turkeys are raised at free-range sheds. These birds weigh heavier and are larger in size as compared to chickens or egg-laying hens, as a matter of fact. Then, they are fed with contaminated water from time to time. Barley, corn and grains are fed to turkeys to help their bodies grow faster. Again, they are subject to years of confinement. Their younger ones are separated from mothers immediately post their birth. Then once the birds attain a certain amount of weight, they are taken to slaughter houses. These horrified birds go through a pain ful de-feathering process,, post which their bodies are dipped in boiling hot water. Then, while these birds are alive and conscious, their necks or throats are slit apart. This is how, turkeys come to your dining tables.
Animal agriculture therefore refers to artificial breeding or over populating of farm specimens. These include hens, chickens, pigs, cows, goats, buffaloes and turkeys. And then, the animals are genetically manipulated by slaughter house soldiers to procure meat for varied forms of the meat industry. To get Chicken wings, almost 12-14 chickens are slaughtered. So, let us put a full stop to this vicious cycle of cruelty and go vegan. We will have a separate segment to outline the level of cruelty that is induced at the fishing industry. Egg-laying hens are also called battery chickens. Literally, the hens or chickens are treated like egg-laying machines. The least amount of regard is given at farms or sheds with respect to their welfare or well-being. Again, hens or chickens are highly curious and inquisitive sentient beings that can feel pain, trauma, and sadness. So, let me break it down into what actually happens here:
The battery chickens are fed with grains, water, barley, and corn so that they fatten themselves up and they are able to produce more and more eggs for human consumption. Once, the hen lays eggs, eggs are immediately hatched. This is done to separate the male chicks and female chicks. For a troupe of male chicks that are laid off by hens, these are ground alive and the chicks are hardly a day old. Workers sometimes gas them to death. The slaughter farms use macerators to grind one-day chicks alive. Female chicks are debeaked and put into cages.
The debeaking process ensures that the highly crammed chicks do not peck each other during their two years of intense confinement. They are put into highly crammed cages, as a matter of fact. The urine or feces of the top layer hens spill over the lower tier cages filled with battery chickens again. Sometimes, the workers keep the sheds lighted 24/7 so that hens keep laying eggs. Actually, it takes about 34 hours for each hen to lay its egg. As 5-11 chickens are crammed into a battery cage, the average size each hen/ chicken occupies is lesser than the size of an A4 paper. The chickens do not have space to even flap their wings as nature had wanted them to be.
The egg-laying hens have too much stress, anxiety and bone loss as they are confined to iron-bar cages 24/7. Natural surrounding mean that hens and chickens would to stroll around into the fresh and open air around bright sun light. But these battery chickens lay in darkness and absolute confinement. They cannot move this way or that way. As a result of the same, there is a bacterial breeding.
Plus, as the chickens are made to lay eggs all the time, the body becomes weaker. The overcrowded chickens are made to stay in their own urine and feces. Therefore cramped chicken sheds, whether they are free range or grilled into bars, become breeding ground for bacteria and viruses. Therefore the chickens develop skin infections, osteoporosis and even heart attacks. Almost 40% of the hens or chickens die before they reach slaughter houses. Again, male chicks are ground alive in mixer grinders or are allowed to rot with no access to food or water. When bacterial infections or bird flu occurs in one bird, all the other chickens confined in that battery cage are also gassed to death by workers at the egg industry.
Broilers are fed excessive quantities of food so that their bodies fatten up by the time they are barely 45 days old. Their slender feet are unable to support their bodies and they fall to the ground. The slaughter houses kill them at slaughter houses by wringing their bodies upside down. Their throats are slit while the hens or chickens are fully consious.
As for the spent egg-laying chickens, their first dose of sunlight is felt by them on their routes to slaughter houses. After 3 years of egg laying their bodies develop osteoporosis, fungal infections and most of the chickens lose their feathers too. In that state, again, they are held upside own and taken in bikes or trucks to slaughter houses. They feel pain, fear and sadness while they are de feathered and then their throats are slit. All of this happens while the chicken are fully conscious.
This is an absolute life of misery for the chickens or hens who love pecking at grains, corn or strolling in sunshine. These birds are sentient beings who are inquisitive and curious by nature. They lay eggs during their menstrual cycles, typically the same way, the female ovum in human beings, produces one. So, we are utilizing a period material for our dining plates. Also, with so much of cruelty and blood shed that happens to chickens or egg laying hens across the globe, do you really think it is worth it?

This is a pitiable state the lambs are put through. The process is tedious and extremely painful for these gentle lambs. These lambs are pierced when they are just about 6-8 weeks old. In other words, their ears are hole-punched without any form of pain relief or sedation, as a matter of fact. Their tails are chopped off too. The male lambs are castrated without any relief, whatsoever. These lambs are anywhere between 2 to 8 weeks old. The process involves creating a painful incision across the lamb’s private organ and cutting through its testicles. Sometimes, a rubber ring is used to cut off the blood supply to the area so that the testicles fall off on their own. This is the most painful form of castration ever possible. Again, when the lamb’s testicles do not fall off, workers or shearers just get them clipped off. Most of these lambs die when they are hardly 8 weeks old. This happens due to starvation. Again, mature sheep die when they are exposed to diseases. Sheep can become diseased when they are cramped in overcrowded sheds, as a matter of fact. Lack of shelter and neglect of animal welfare allows these sheep to die much before their drag to the slaughterhouses.
The unwanted sheep or lambs are exported from Australia to the Middle East via over crowded ships or container lorries, as a matter of fact. Here, they are starved from food or water. The trips can be highly excruciating for the animals. Almost 40% of the sheep or lambs collapse before their voyage to their slaughter houses.
